THE POWER OF IMAGES

Impact talks
To bring my studies to the attention of colleagues (and a wider audience), I organized a change process in collaboration with Prospektor and the Pakhuis de Zwijger debate center. The aim was to raise awareness among fellow photographers, photo editors, and make adjustments to current image banks and their usage.

During the first evening, ‘What is the problem?’, I presented the results of my second research and engaged in discussions with editorial teams and photographers about the dynamics of image representation in Dutch media.

During the second evening, 'The new image creators,' we sought inspiration. We explored initiatives, image banks, magazines, or (news) organizations actively working towards a more representative image culture. We also examined how other media and creative disciplines use images and what examples journalistic media can follow.

During the final evening, 'The future of image making,' we delved into the influence of artificial intelligence and digitization on future images. We looked at their impact on socially marginalized groups and professional groups such as photographers and news creators.

In addition to these public programs, I, along with press photographer Ilvy Njiokiktjien, engaged in discussions with press photographers. Together with journalist and image researcher Merel Bem, we also conducted workshops at various editorial offices, including those of RTL Nieuws, VPRO, and various journalism schools.
